While studying the Native American Tribes of Nebraska, 4th grade students at Fire Ridge Elementary learned that the Native people used all parts of the buffalo, making sure to never waste any parts.  One way they ensured no waste was to use the pieces of buffalo hides to write their stories. As part of the lessons, students created buffalo hide legends/stories like the Native Americans of Nebraska did.  The students enjoyed learning the meanings of different Native American symbols and using their creative minds to piece together the symbols to create their own stories.

Mr. Ehlers, a Fire Ridge 4th grade teacher, explained that “students really enjoy this activity because they learn the meanings of different Native American symbols.  This activity gives the students an opportunity to apply what they learned about Native American life and use that knowledge to create their own legend to pass along to other generations.”
