The White House helps symbolize American freedom and democracy.

The White House is located in Washington, D.C. and is where the President of the United States lives and works. However, the president does not own the White House. He lives there only while he is President. The American people vote on who will be President every 4 years.

In 1792 people were invited to draw a picture of what they though the president's house should look like. James Hoban's design was chosen. Unfortunately, George Washington, our first president, did not get to live in the white house. It wasn't finished in time! He was the only president who never lived in the White House.

People can visit and tour the White House. However, there are only certain rooms that you are allowed to go into. While you are on a tour, you can see furniture and other things that past presidents used.
