As our children use the Internet more often today, it is important that we talk to them about being safe when using the Internet for e-mail, chatting, etc. As your children get older and possibly start using the Internet more to connect with friends, it is important for them to have rules to protect them. Talk to your children about the potential dangers, and set clear rules and know what they are doing online. Below are some tips to assist you in talking to your children about safe online behavior.
- Keep the computer in a family room, living room, or kitchen, not in your child's bedroom. You want to be able to monitor what your child is doing while using the computer.
- Keep personal information personal. Children should never give out their name, address, phone number, school name, sports teams, or other information that can be used to identify them offline. Children should not posts pictures of themselves in chat rooms, either.
- Just as in the real world, children should not talk to strangers. Be careful about adding strangers to IM buddy lists, people are not always who they say they are.
- Children should never meet an online friend in an offline setting. People are not always who they pretend to be. If you do allow your child to meet an online friend, adults should chaperone the meeting.
- Children should tell a grown up if they read anything online that makes them feel uncomfortable.
Visit the link below for more information. It is to the Nebraska Attorney General's website about Internet safety. On this site there are links for teachers, parents, and kids. It is a good source of information and can be used as a starting point to help you talk to your kids about staying safe online.
