Kindergarten classes are scheduled for library media once a week for 30 minutes. Students also check out books during this time. Proper book care, literature appreciation and selection, fact vs. fiction, writing and illustrating stories, simple research projects, and an introduction to computer software programs are some of the objectives for our kindergarten students. Students in 1st -5th grade have flexibly scheduled library classes on a rotating basis that meet various times during the school year. The classes meet for 30 minutes a day for 5-12 days at a time. Blocks are planned to ensure that media and information skills are integrated into the curriculum. 1st grade units of study include library citizenship, bats, Caldecott Medal books, polar animals, U.S. Presidents, Nebraska Golden Sower Award, animal habitats, and whales and dolphins. 2nd grade units of study include library skills, keyboarding, holiday customs, rocks, layers of earth, earthquakes and volcanoes, and the solar system. 3rd grade units of study include library skills, Veteran's Day, animals, keyboarding, countries around the world, and genres of literature. 4th grade units of study include keyboarding, inventors and inventions, U.S. states, and poetry. 5th grade units of study include keyboarding, the research process, genres, and immigration.
